Mighty Metals

Week 7

Maths – Multiplication

In Maths this week we have reached the end of our multiplication topic. The children have been given the opportunity to extend their knowledge by completing questions that has required them to regroup each column. Pupils were then able to use their understanding that they have gained throughout the topic to create their own multiplication word problems to give to their partners to answer.

English – Elf on the shelf

Since the start of December, Year 3 have had a new member of the class (our class Elf). Each morning the children have come into school to witness the mess that our new troublesome member has caused. This week our English lessons have been focussed on writing a letter to the Elf sharing our thoughts and feelings towards his mischievous nature. The children have also been given the opportunity to use dictionaries and thesauruses to find and include more interesting words to give their work more credibility.

Science - Iron

In Science this week we have continued to explore our topic of mighty metals focussing our lessons on Iron. We discovered that iron is often found in food, with the pupils learning which foods contain this important mineral and the importance that it plays within our bodies.

Week 6

Maths – Multiplication

In maths this week we have continued looking at multiplication with the children using the standard column method to work out their answers. The children were also introduced to the concept of carrying and regrouping columns, taking their multiplying skills to the next level.

English – Iron Man

In our English lessons this week the children were given the opportunity to finish writing their diary entries in the role of the Iron Man. The children were then asked to work with a partner to take part in some editing lessons, going over each other’s work with their purple polishing pens, correcting any spelling, grammar or punctuation mistakes that they could find.

Topic – Metal Experiments

In our topic lessons this week we became scientists, carrying out different experiments with our magnets. We conducted an experiment to see what metals are magnetic, analysing their key features seeing if there were any similarities between those metals that were attracted to our magnet and those that repelled. We also carried out another experiment to analyse the strength of different magnet types, using paperclips as our evidence testing which magnet could pick up the most.

Week 5

Maths – Multiplication

In maths this week we have carried on with our focus of multiplication whilst using the inverse operation of division to help us double check our answers. The pupils were then given the opportunity to apply their knowledge answering some reasoning questions, picking out the key pieces of information to help them obtain their answers.

English – Iron Man

In English this week we have carried on exploring our class book of the Iron Man. The pupils were given the opportunity to write a diary entry taking on the role of the Iron Man. We have taken part in a series of planning lessons before being given the opportunity to show our knowledge and understanding of the book by writing our diary entries.

PE – Haka

In PE the last few weeks we have been taking part in some dance. The pupils were introduced to the dance that rugby teams often perform at the start of the match. We have had a go at creating our own routines in groups, before being given the opportunity to share these with the rest of the class.

Week 4

Maths – Multiplication

In maths this week we have started our new topic of multiplication, where the children have looked at interpreting the questions in different ways. The children have been answering the questions by organising their numbers into groups to make the questions more visible.

Topic – Magnetism

This week in our topic lessons we have begun to look at magnetism. We were given the chance to explore different types of magnets whilst discovering how magnets are used on a day to day basis. We then took our learning into our own hands by performing an experiment discovering which materials around school are magnetic.

English – Iron Man

In English this week we have been exploring our class book of the Iron Man. The children have looked at interpreting the book in different ways through freeze frames, role plays and some hot seat activities. These have really allowed the children to engage in the book by taking on the role of different characters looking at the story from different perspectives.

Here are some pictures from our English lessons over the week.

On Wednesday we took part in an Art workshop making our own plaster casts that resemble different pieces of metal.

Week 3

Maths – Reasoning Questions

In maths this week we have reached the end of our reasoning module, with the pupils putting their skills that they have gathered throughout the topic into action by being able to create their own reasoning questions for their partners to answer. The pupils have continued to extend their knowledge by using words such as greater than and fewer than in their questions.

Topic – Forces

This week in our topic lessons we have continued to explore the different forces that we have around us. The pupils have taken their learning beyond the classroom exploring the forces that act upon a parachute in different situations, testing and analysing them first hand for themselves reporting their findings back to the rest of the class.

English – Subordinate Clauses

In English this week the pupils have been looking at subordinate clauses. We have been creating our own and seeing how we can use them in our writing to give our work more credibility, by giving the reader more information surrounding a topic.

Week 2

Topic – Forces

This week in our topic lessons we have been carrying on exploring different forces. The children have looked deeper into gravity and friction having been set the task to identify which materials cause the most friction. The children were set the challenge to create their own experiment, having a group discussion looking into investigations further thinking about fair testing, equipment and analysis to make sure their experiment would be plausible.

Maths – Reasoning Questions

In maths this week we have been looking at different types of reasoning questions that have included some technical words that have begun to test our thinking skills. We have continued to use our bar model method to help us visualise the question and physically see the amounts increasing and decreasing.

English – Toy Reports

In English this week we have been looking at writing reports about some of our favourite toys and games. At the start of the week the children were given the opportunity to explore prepositions, looking at their meaning and how we can use them within our writing. The children were then asked to write their reports on their toys for someone to then be able to pick up with no prior knowledge and understand how it works. The children were then given the task to peer assess their reports with their partners, highlighting the things they liked best and parts that they could improve upon.

Mighty Metals

Week 1

Maths – Reasoning Questions

In maths this week we have been looking at different reasoning questions, allowing us to use all of our knowledge that we have gained throughout our maths lessons so far this year to pick out key pieces of information from a question. The children have been using the bar model method to help them answer their questions, putting it into a more visual structure for them to follow and obtain the answers. The class have also been practicing their times tables throughout the week, really showing the effort that has been put in at home.

English – Iron Man

In English this week we have started looking at our new book of the Iron Man, exploring the key text that links in closely with our topic of mighty metals. We have read through the first chapter, with the children being set the task to perform a review highlighting key questions, characters and events that are portrayed within the first few pages of the book.

Topic – Forces

This week in our topic lessons we have been looking at different forces. The children have demonstrated their understanding of gravity, air resistance, friction and magnetism by exploring different movements. The children have discussed Newton’s law, understanding how forces were discovered, whilst being are able to highlight what forces are acting upon different sporting movements at each time.
