Welcome to the final term of the year!
This term we are going to be learning about Brazil, the rainforest, how different it is to the UK and of course, carnival. This will tie in nicely with the very first DPA Summer Fayre on July 8th.
In Maths we are continuing to look at mental maths, multiplication and division. While in Science we are going to be looking at materials, their uses and how to group them.
In addition, we will be performing a production of "The Bee Musical" with year 2 at the end of the term.
We have been really busy this week. The children all tried their best in the Phonics Screening that has taken place this week - well done!
We have also been continuing to think about our topic of Rio de Vida - some of the children have already bought in some great examples of home learning. This term these will be added to our class board to make a really colourful display.
In science we have been looking at materials, and distinguishing between an object and what it is made of, exploring our school to see what materials have been used in its construction.
In Maths, the children have all shown a really good grasp of multiplication thinking about the number of groups and then the number of items in each group. This has been a good time to put into practice the children's knowledge of counting in 2s and 5s.
Finally, the children have been beginning to look at creating and debugging simple computer programmes. Firstly by controlling a "Teacherbot" as it moved around the classroom and then by applying that knowledge to the BeeBots. We will be developing this more over the coming weeks.
In Maths this week, we have moved on from division to first look at telling the time to the hour (o'clock) and half past. The children were all very confident with this. We have now begun to explore money, initially just looking at the coins and notes in circulation in the UK and now comparing the values and working out coins of equal value, for example a 5p is the same as 5 x 1p pieces. This has been a challenge, and we will continue to work on it next week.
In our topic work, we have been combining our learning with using computers safely to find out information as we have explored the animals that live in the Amazon Rainforest. The children have really enjoyed this, and found some interesting facts about their chosen animals, from Sloths to Tarantulas!
The children have been rehearsing almost every day for the performance of The Bee Musical at the end of term, with Year 2. Everyone is singing beautifully and working hard to remember their lines. Please don't forget to bring in your child's costume next week, thank you.
This week we are looking at some traditional tales and legends from Brasil. We have been thinking about the story of the Vitoria-Regia flower in particular. It tells how a woman from the village tried to reach the moon, but instead fell into the Amazon River as she saw the reflection. The moon felt sorry for this, so turned her into the flower. The children have enjoyed thinking carefully about the story and retelling it through drama - without using their voices at all! They will also be illustrating the story and writing their own version of the tale.
