This term, reception children will learn about how things work. They will explore machines and technology and look at:
Week 6th - 10th February
Our bear hunt stories have really challenged the children this week. They've had to sequence the story, write labels and captions, and write a sentence with a different ending, phew! They all worked really hard and we had some fantastic endings.
We've been reading the fantastic book 'Supertato' and making our own superveg. We looked at lots of different vegetables that we don't always see. The leeks were very popular! We also looked as some different fruits. We wrote speech bubbles for our superveg too.
We've been playing some fantastic team games this week. We talked about how working as a team would only be successful if we talked to each other, and listened to each other. Cross the river was very popular!
One of our challenges this week was to build a 3D shape using art straws. This was a lot harder than it sounds! The children really showed us a 'can do' attitude and didn't give up.
We have been writing our own endings to the Bear Hunt story!
We have also had great fun learning how to use an ipad to film our own endings to the Bear Hunt story. We acted out our alternative ending and our friend filmed us, then we swapped over. It was a great way to end our ICT topic.
Week 30th Jan - 3rd Feb
We've really enjoyed our Chinese New Year focus this week and have loved making dragon art and doing our dragon dances.
In PE we have been using the large equipment. We especially enjoyed having ago on the ropes.
In Maths we have been thinking all about shape by naming shapes and also by thinking about what shapes look like. Look at us on a shape hunt outside!
Chinese New Year
This week we have also been looking at the traditions that happen during Chinese New Year. We have learnt a special song, how to say Happy New Year and we also created some fantastic dragons. We used our dragons to create a whole class dance to the beating drums!
We have been learning how to program a robot to make a jam sandwich this week. We had to think very carefully about our instructions because the robot would make a big mess if we weren't careful about what we said.
This week we have been looking at healthy living. We've been looking at the importance of sleep, healthy food and exercise. We learned that you can't switch a vegetable on, but it can help to switch you on!! We used our art and design skills to make healthy food plates.
In Maths we have been looking at weight and capacity. We've been using a balance and comparing the weight of items in the classroom. We've also been looking at capacity and how much different containers can hold. Just because it's taller doesn't mean it holds more!!
We have been programming the Beebots to navigate a grid. We learned how to sequence instructions and to clear the memory to start again. The Beebots were a big hit with the children.
We've been amazed by the fantastic writing that our reception children have been creating. They've been writing lists of things to put in their backpack for an exciting bear hunt.
Week 16th-20th January
This week we have been writing about all the things we would put in a back-pack if we were to go on a bear hunt! We thought carefully about what sounds we could hear in the words and what the letters look like too.
In Maths we have been looking at weight and how heavy items are. We have been practising putting items in order from heaviest to lightest.
Week 9th-13th January
This week we have been learning how to take our own photos on an ipad and also how to print them off.
We also looked at ipad safety and how to carry it and take care of it.
'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' has been our focus story too. We have created some exciting bear art work whilst exploring in the classroom.
In Maths we have been exploring one more than a given number and we have been thinking about this with our numbers all the way to 20.
