Term 5 - Why do ladybirds have spots?

Week 1 and week 2

24th - 28th April and 1st-5th May

In Maths we are learning all about money. We are exploring each different coin by looking at its size, shape and colour as well as what it is worth. We will be naming the value of each coin, for example, recognising and being able to name a 1 pence coin.

In Literacy we will be spotting the punctuation missing in holiday news sentences. We will then be using what we know about writing in sentences to write our own news about we did in the Easter holiday.

We will be starting our new topic which is called- Why do ladybirds have spots? We will be doing lots of investigating around mini-beasts and thinking about what they look like and why. We will also be learning songs and poems and add actions and music too.

Week 3

8th-12th May

In Maths this week we are looking at subtraction. We are thinking about how to subtract by counting back. We will be using the language subtraction, subtract and equals so why not practise this out of school too. Can you find any subtraction problems in the supermarket- did you add too many apples to the bag and now you need to subtract some? How many are left?

In Literacy this week we are continuing to practise writing in full sentences.

In topic this week we are contiuning to explore our mini-beast topic. We will look at the story- 'The Bad Tempered Ladybird' and discuss this.

We are also very excited about the live caterpillars we have growing in our classrooms. They are under close observation as we are waiting for them to go through their life cycle and for us to see some beautiful butterflies develop.

Amazing Show and Tell

This week the children were amazed to see a real Woolly Mammoth tusk that was brought into school by one of our children They learnt about the Ice Age and how Mammoths were alive thousands of years ago. Not quite minibeasts, but absolutely amazing!

Week 4 (15th - 19th May)

This week we are continuing with our minibeast topic and using our creative skills to create a minibeast with craft materials. We've been given several options and told that we need to plan our design first before making it.

In maths we are looking at the properties of 3D shape, specifically whether shapes have curved or flat edges and sides, and testing to see if they roll or slide. We'll then look at creating and describing repeating patterns.

Week 5 (22nd - 26th May)

This week in Maths we will be looking at adding and subtracting. We will use objects to do this and find out how many are left. We will also be looking at what this looks like as a number sentence too.

This week in Literacy we will be writing a fact about the mini-beasts we made last week and we will be thinking about what we need in our sentences too.

In topic we will be finishing off our investigations about mini-beasts. We hope to see our butterflies appear and then release them. We will also be making our very own mini beast masks and use these to have a 'mini-beast ball' with dancing and games. We will find out what a 'ball' is first too!
