Autumn 2: Mighty Metals

Week 8

Build up to Christmas

In the last week of term, we have had another busy week looking back over all of the things that we have been learning throughout our mighty metals topic. The children have also been writing their letters to our class Elf highlighting their favourite things that he has done using expanded noun phrases. We have also undertaken some Christmas maths investigations working out how many presents and legs there are in the 12 days of Christmas.

Week 7

Topic – Magnetism

In our topic lessons this week we have performed an experiment to test which materials are magnetic. The children were given the opportunity to write up their own method to their experiment and display their results clearly in a table.

Maths – Addition & Subtraction

In our maths lessons this week we have been recapping our addition and subtraction topic, furthering our knowledge of the different methods that we can use to solve different equations. We have also dug deeper into addition and subtraction word problems, using reasoning to justify our answers.

English – Iron Man Letter

In English this week we have been building up to writing a letter to the Iron Man to persuade him to help us defeat the Space Angel Bat Dragon. We have looked at what a persuasive letter should look like, whilst been given the opportunity to create some persuasive sentences both as a class and individuals.

We have also been looking at freeze frames in our English lessons from the battle between the villagers and the dragon!

Week 6

English – Character description

In our English lessons this week we have continued to read deeper into our class text of the iron man. The Space Angel Bat Dragon has now made his big appearance and is on the move from Australia to the UK. The children have really focussed on character description with their task being to write a letter to the people of Didcot to warn them about this beastly creature that is heading their way.

Maths – Place Value and Number Lines

In our Maths lessons over the week we have been recapping our knowledge on place value and number lines. We have looked into these areas in great depth to really check our knowledge and understanding and how these areas will help us moving forward with our other topic focuses.

Topic – Iron in our body

Over the week in our topic lessons we have been looking at the role iron plays within our bodies. The children are now aware of the importance of iron within our diet and which types of foods they can eat that contain the most iron.

In our topic lessons this week we have been exploring magnetic fields through different size materials.

Week 5

Maths – Multiplication & Division by 8

In our maths lessons this week we have been looking at the 8 times table. We have been performing different multiplication and division questions and have looked at representing these in different ways. We have looked at bar models in depth, using reasoning to justify are representations.

English – Iron Man

In English we have continued with our book of the iron man, reading further into the story. Our focus this week has been on expanded noun phrases, using these within our writing to give our work more credibility. Our next piece of writing that we our working towards is a character description of the Angel bat Dragon that has made its way to Earth.

Week 4

Topic – Magnetism

In our topic lessons this week we have continued to explore magnetism. The children have taken control of their own learning by performing their own investigations into which materials are magnetic. We were given the opportunity to explore different objects around the school and we have now stated thinking about why some objects attract and others repel to magnets.

Maths – Multiplication & Division by 4

In maths this week we have continued to look at multiplication and division but have now moved onto the 4 times table. We have been looking at how many different ways we can make specific numbers using our new found knowledge of multiplication and division whilst using reasoning to justify our answers to certain questions.

English – Iron Man

In English we were given the opportunity to finish writing our openings to the iron man story in the style of Ted Hughes. The pupils were able to produce some great pieces of work really showcasing their understanding of the use of similes and metaphors and the impact that these have within our writing. We have also read deeper into the book where the Iron Man had decided to eat all of the farmer’s machinery, with us being given the task to create our own solution to this problem.

Here are some photos of us taking part in our golf taster session.

Week 3

Topic – Magnets

This week within our topic lessons we have been learning all about magnets. We have looked at the different types of magnets that there are and how each magnet has a north and a south pole. We have discovered that the Earth is a giant magnet and have had a go at using a compass to find north using the Earth’s magnetic field. The children have also taken part in an experiment, analysing the magnetic field of bar magnets when opposite and similar poles are facing one another to determine if there is any difference.

Maths – Multiplication & Division by 3

In our maths lessons we have carried on looking at multiplication and division, learning how different amounts can be grouped and evenly split into different sections. The pupils have also looked deeper into the topic through answering different word problems, where they are expected to do some independent thinking to determine what the questions is specifically asking them to do.

English - Iron Man

Our English lessons this week have been based around the Iron man. We have taken our learning outside at the start of the week when we were given the task to draw the Iron man to scale, taking up the whole length of the school. We have been looking deeper into the story through an author’s perspective, analysing the style of writing that Ted Hughes uses with his elaborate similes and metaphors that allow the readers to paint each image in their head. As we move into next week the pupils will be using the knowledge that they have gained to re-write chapter 1, focusing more on character description in the style of Ted Hughes.

Week 2

Celebration Week

This week in year 3 we have been celebrating Bonfire Night, Diwali and Remembrance Day. We have completed a number of different activities that have allowed us to engage in this week looking at the celebrations from different points of view. Our English lessons have been focussed around the Poppy and why this symbol is chosen to symbolise war. For this we have conducted our own research and created our own remembrance day booklets that has enabled us to really showcase our knowledge around this area. In maths we have now moved onto multiplication and Division with this week focussing on making equal groups out of different sets of resources.

Celebration Week in year 3

Week 1

Topic – Forces

This week in our topic lessons we have been carrying on exploring different forces. The children have looked deeper into gravity and friction having been set the task to identify which materials cause the most friction. The children were set the challenge to create their own experiment, having a group discussion looking into investigations further thinking about fair testing, equipment and analysis to make sure their experiment would be plausible.

English – Iron Man

In English this week we have started looking at our new book of the Iron Man, exploring the key text that links in closely with our topic of mighty metals. We have read through the first chapter, with the children being set the task to look deeper into the text through an illustration whilst using their imaginations to think about some events that may occur in the book.

Maths – Addition & Subtraction Reasoning

In our maths lessons this week we have continued to look deeper into addition and subtraction by using reasoning to help take our understanding to the next level. We have also begun to look at addition and subtraction questions that requires us to exchange two columns during each question.
