A video to help prepare Nursery, reception, Year 1 and Key worker groups in Yrs 2-5

Weekly News 15/05/2020

Yesterday, Mrs Ashcroft sent out a letter outlining the school’s current plans to reopen to more pupils from the 1st June, the proposed dates for a phased return of schools. If you have not received this letter, please contact the office immediately.

We have had very positive feedback on the use of the daily White Rose Maths activities. We have intentionally set the work a week behind White Rose to ensure all the resources are accessible. From Monday, although the explanation videos are still there, the sheets are not downloadable from the White Rose website. Instead, we will be uploading the sheets onto the Home Learning section of the school website. If you have any questions about this, please speak to the member of staff when they make contact.

This week, in response to request from parents, we have started using optional Google Classroom sessions where children can ask questions and talk to the staff through text. These sessions have been great as children have been able to upload pictures, documents and Powerpoints of the work they’ve completed, allowing both staff and children to comment on their success. Next week’s timings are as follows:

Year 1 Tuesday 1:00-2:30 and Thursday 10:30-12:00

Year 2 Tuesday 10:30 -12:00 and Thursday 1:00-2:30

Year 3 Wednesday 10:30-12:00 and Friday 1:00-2:30

Year 4 Tuesday 9:00-10:30 and Friday 10:30-12:00

Year 5 Monday 1:00-2:30 and Wednesday 1:00-2:30

If you have not yet received your class code, please email the office.

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are
- Sycamore for Spelling Shed, once again showing they are top at lockdown spelling!
- Rowan for Doodle Maths, with 53% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 5 for Times table Rock Stars, taking back the crown from Year 3 with 96.89% on accuracy.

Weekly News 08/05/2020

Happy Friday. 75 years ago today was the end of fighting in World War 2, a conflict involving the vast majority of the world’s countries. VE day commemorates the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces, ending 6 years of fighting. There are a range of celebrations still happening today, including flypasts, special programmes and a message from the Queen.  If you’d like to speak to your children about the significance of VE day, websites such as Newsround and Twinkl have age appropriate resources.

In recent days there has been increased speculation about school’s reopening to the majority of students. The position of the Department for Education remains clear that there has been no date set for the reopening of schools. Schools will remain closed, except for children of critical workers and vulnerable children, until the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to re-open and the five tests set out by Government to beat this virus have been met. When an announcement is made and we have some clarity around what the expectations are, we will plan how that will apply to school, following the most up to date guidance.

In response to request from parents, we have set up optional Google Classroom sessions where children can ask questions and talk to the staff through text. If you have not yet received your class code, please email the office.

Year 1 Tuesday 1:00-2:30 and Thursday 10:30-12:00

Year 2 Tuesday 10:30 -12:00 and Thursday 1:00-2:30

Year 3 Wednesday 10:30-12:00 and Friday 1:00-2:30

Year 4 Tuesday 9:00-10:30 and Friday 10:30-12:00

Year 5 Monday 1:00-2:30 and Wednesday 1:00-2:30

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…
- Sycamore for Spelling Shed reasserting their lockdown dominance!
- Sycamore for Doodle Maths, with 50% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 3 for Times table Rock Stars, winning again with 96.22% on accuracy.

Weekly News 01/05/2020

Happy May Morning! Some of you may have been up to see the sun rise this morning, but after the last few days of dreadful weather, at least it has come back out!  Thank you to all children (and parents) who have sent in letters or pictures to school, the staff have really enjoyed seeing what you are up to.

We are still following government guidance by providing emergency child care for vulnerable children and children of key workers whose work is critical to the fight against COVID-19. For the rest of the community, we are contacting you via telephone and it has been great to speak to parents and children when we call. Remember, if you have any concerns about helping your child learn or you need any other support from the school, please let us know by contacting the school office by email: office@gemsdidcotprimary.co.uk or by discussing it with the member of staff who calls you.

With the Home Learning Packs we have set, we’ve tried to create a balance between online learning and tasks away from the screen. Please remember that we are not expecting you to replicate an entire school day; 1-2 hours learning is sufficient. More than anything else, try to read at least 10 minutes a day as this will have the greatest impact. We have also tried to post a range of other activities on the ‘other learning opportunities’ page and links on our Facebook.

Hopefully you’ve been able to access the White Rose Maths on their website. Links have been put on Facebook, the website and the Home Learning Packs. Please remember that we are setting the previous week’s work so that all resources are uploaded by the time you come to access them. Once again, if you have any concerns regarding the Maths, please talk to the member of staff when they make contact.

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…
- Sycamore for Spelling Shed, taking back the virtual Mr Bumble from Ash!
- Rowan for Doodle Maths, with 57% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 3 for Times table Rock Stars, winning again with 95.37% on accuracy.

Finally, we had some very exciting news this week regarding Year 5. Before lockdown, Year 5 entered a national competition called Poetry by Heart. The Year 5s worked as small groups to recite a poem which we videoed and sent off. This week we received confirmation that one group were chosen as national finalists. This is an amazing achievement and we are all very proud of Year 5s. If you haven’t yet seen the video, look on our Facebook or Twitter page.

Weekly News 24/04/2020

Happy Friday! We have now completed the first week of the Summer term. Home Learning Packs were uploaded on Monday and we have loved seeing the children’s fantastic learning at home – please keep sending their work in by email to the school office address: office@gemsdidcotprimary.co.uk as we would like to showcase it on Facebook each week. We are trying to provide a range of other links on both the website and Facebook, from Shakespeare productions to competitions the children can participate in. Please keep checking the Facebook page for these.

Remember, if you have any concerns about helping your child learn or you need any other support from the school, please let us know by contacting the school office by email: office@gemsdidcotprimary.co.uk or by discussing it with the member of staff who calls you. We miss the children very much, but we must follow the government’s guidance to keep everyone in our community safe. So, we’re carrying on with contacting you all by phone and providing emergency child care for vulnerable children and children of key workers whose work is critical to the fight against COVID-19. The children and staff who have been in school this week were very lucky to receive a care package from Tesco which they are very grateful for.

From next week, you will notice that the Maths section of the Home Learning Packs will change. In school we follow White Rose Maths, an approach that looks at producing strong, secure learning and real progress. White Rose has been working closely with the BBC Bitesize Daily Maths team to make a clear learning plan for the summer term. We want children to be as well-prepared as possible for their next school year so to help make this happen, we’re going to be following their 12-week learning plan that means children can:

- Make sure they understand the main concepts they need for their work next year
- Cover any new learning that they have not yet done in school.

As some of the learning will be new content, it may need more input from parents. However, White Rose Maths and BBC Bitesize have produced resources that have complementary videos or interactive help. These are daily lessons so if you can, try to follow the suggested timetable. In the learning packs, we will be creating links for the previous week (i.e. The learning pack will be uploaded on the 27th, but we’ll be linking to the White Rose Maths work on the 20th). This will allow all resources to be fully accessible and uploaded.

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…
- Ash for Spelling Shed, stopping Sycamore from taking a fourth consecutive week!
- Beech for Doodle Maths, with 52% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 3 for Times table Rock Stars, winning again with 96.87% on accuracy.

We can’t say yet when we’ll be able to open the school fully, but rest assured that we’ll continue doing our utmost to keep your child learning and our school community connected.

Weekly News 17/04/2020

Happy Friday! As staff, over the past three weeks, we have been ringing to keep in contact. All families have been contacted, but we have not been able to get connected to some. We have left messages where possible. If you have changed your phone number, please let the office know.

If things were normal, we’d be returning to school on Monday. Due to this fact, home learning packs will be uploaded to the school website on Monday 20th. Please remember we are not expecting you to recreate a school day. We’ve had some lovely feedback about the learning packs as it allows a degree of flexibility to your day whilst still providing some structure. https://www.gemsdidcotprimary.org/home-learning-1/

Please also explore the other learning opportunities we’ve uploaded, there is a whole range of activities in there to spark interest and enjoyment! https://www.gemsdidcotprimary.org/other-learning-opportuni…/

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…
- Sycamore for Spelling Shed, a third week at the top! Can anyone take the crown?
- Hazel for Doodle Maths, with 32% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 3 for Times table Rock Stars, scoring a last-week-beating 97.55% on accuracy.

From Monday 20th, the BBC will be providing age appropriate lessons on the Iplayer and Red Button. Please see the link for more information. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zn9447h
Although we do not yet know what the BBC is providing, these resources could be used to supplement the Home Learning packs we are providing. We’ll update you with more information when we have it.

But for now, in this ‘new normal’, remember to Be Kind, Be Brilliant!

Weekly News 10/04/2020

Firstly, a very happy Easter to you all! Now that we’ve been away from school for three weeks, all families should have been contacted by staff to check in. If possible, we are trying to ring from school, but if you see a blocked number, it maybe from GEMS! It’s been great to speak to both parents and children, finding out all the great activities you’ve been completing. Whilst the school is closed, we will try contacting you every two weeks to keep in touch – if you have any questions, please feel free to ask us and we’ll do our best to answer it. If there is anything urgent, please email the office. As we have one more week of ‘holiday’, to remind you there will not be home learning packs set on Monday 13th. Home learning packs will be uploaded to the school website on Monday 20th.  We will still continue to provide links where we think they are appropriate or worthwhile.

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…
- Sycamore for Spelling Shed, a second week at the top!
- Beech for Doodle Maths, with 39% hitting their weekly target.
- Year 3 for Times table Rock Stars, scoring a whopping 96.33% on accuracy.

In the news recently, there have been reports of the possibility of schools opening earlier than anticipated or with a phased opening. We are operating under government guidance and at the moment, we have had no instruction as yet, to open schools.  Schools will remain closed until further notice to all. Schools will only be re-opened when the scientific advice says it would be safe to do so.

Thank you to all the families who put up rainbows or bears in the windows for children to spot on their daily walk. As it is Easter weekend, we thought if you’re able, maybe place colourful eggs in the window for people to hunt! If you want some to colour in, please look at the link below where we have some templates.

So, whilst Easter will be a bit strange, please do have a very well earned break, enjoy the lovely sunshine if you can.  More importantly stay safe and well.

Weekly News 03/04/2020

The end of another week and we hope you are all still alright and coping with the challenges of lockdown. Staff have started to call families this week and it has been lovely to chat about what everyone has been up to. Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of your different accomplishments; it is great to see the range of activities that have been completed! We would like to make this a weekly photo album so please continue to send photos to the office email.

Thank you to all those who have been able to access the learning platforms. This week’s winners are…

- Sycamore for Spelling Shed, beating Chestnut by only a few points.

- Rowan for Doodle Maths, with 60% hitting their weekly target.

- Year 5 for Times table Rockstars, beating out Year 3 by 0.14 on accuracy.

Today, if events were different, it would have officially been the start of the Easter holidays. Due to this we will not be setting learning packs for the next two weeks, starting them again on Monday 20th April, the date we would have returned. As it is Easter, the school office will be closed during the break so our response via office email or Facebook may take longer.

However, we have spent time collating and posting a whole range of links that you can use during the Easter holiday. Please find them at https://www.gemsdidcotprimary.org/other-learning-opportunities-1/ if you haven’t already accessed them.

There are a couple of resources we wanted to particularly highlight for you to prioritise over the Easter holidays.

1. A poetry competition run by the Somerset Literacy Network (of which we are a part of).

2. An art and poetry competition run by Oxfordshire council. Please see the links below explaining all the details

The key point of all the learning we have set so far is for families to spend time and talk. Cook together, listen to music, draw, do a jigsaw, do some gardening, make the beds. For the next two weeks, enjoy your Easter break and fingers crossed, we’ll see you soon!

Maths

Our normal Maths curriculum follows the planning of White Rose Maths. To see the overview of the year, please go to https://www.gemsdidcotprimary.org/mathematics-1/

With all the resources we've shared in the learning pack, the overall intention was to consolidate and revise, not teach new content. White Rose have uploaded a whole range of Maths resources to continue the children's learning at home. These include instructional videos and daily lessons following the small step planning.

Please feel free to use these resources but be advised that it is new content that has yet to be taught in class and your child may struggle if left to complete the work independently. When we return to school, teachers will continue their Maths teaching from where they stopped, reteaching where needed to ensure everyone is able to access the same learning objectives.

Weekly News - 27/03/2020

Thank you for all the kind messages of support that we’ve received this week. We hope that the activities that we’ve set have been useful and you’ve enjoyed working through some of the challenges together. For those that have been able to access the online learning platforms, each week we’ll announce the winning class. If you haven’t won this week, can you help boost your class for next week?

Spelling shed – Congratulations to Sycamore – a virtual Mr Bumble for you!

Times Table Rock Stars – Year 5 who have been 94.50% accurate this week.

Doodle Maths – Beech – 55% of you hitting your targets this week.

We’d love to see what else you’ve been up to whilst at home. If you’d like to share pictures of the work or activities you’ve been up to, please send them to the school office email office@gemsdidcotprimary.co.uk. We’ll upload a selection of them next Friday.
