Paws, Claws and Whiskers

W/C 29th March 2021

We have come to the end of our ‘Paws, Caws and Whiskers’ topic this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed this topic, why not ask them to tell you some things they have learned through this topic?

In Term 5 our new topic will be ‘Moon Zoom’ where the children will be developing their knowledge of technology, space and materials.

Easter Headband Competition

The pupils spent Tuesday afternoon designing and making an Easter hat for the Easter hat competition that was held this week. We had some fabulous entries and overall winners! Please see the photos below of the children having some fun making their hats.

Other learning

In RE this week we continued to think about Easter and how it is celebrated. The children built on their current knowledge of how Easter is celebrated by learning about Simnel cake, Hot Cross Buns and what Christians do when they go to church. The children have continued to focus on developing ball skills in PE.

W/C 22nd March 2021

In maths this week we have been learning about capacity and volume. We know now that ‘Volume’ means the amount in a container and ‘Capacity’ means the amount a container can hold. We have been measuring and comparing capacity and experimented with predicting the amount of cubes different sized containers would hold and then carefully counted cubes into the containers to see if our predictions were correct. When talking about volume we used the vocabulary:

  • Full
  • Nearly full/empty
  • Half full / empty
  • Empty
  • More
  • Less

Topic and Science

In topic this week we thought more about the words, herbivore, carnivore and omnivore whilst thinking about different animal diets. We designed a meal for a human omnivore and a meal for a human herbivore. Please see the photos below and why not ask your child to explain to you what these words mean!

We also thought about the structure of common animals and discussed the similarities and differences of land and sea animals, including humans. We then drew an animal labelled the different parts of the body.

Other learning

In RE this week we continued to think about the Easter story and in French we have been revising colour words and played a fun game of colour bingo! We have had two PSHE sessions this week and thought about how to safely cross a road, the pupils were introduced to the Green Cross Code. Our second session focused on staying safe in the kitchen and the children made a poster about kitchen safety.

W/C 15th March

In maths this week we have been looking at weight. We have used balance scales to see if an object is heavier, lighter or the same weight. We have used the language- heavy, light, lighter, heavier, the same, balanced.

In topic we have continued to think about animals and the classification groups as last week. We have taken this learning on further to think about the facts that make our favourite animal for example a cow a mammal and did a piece of non-fiction writing.

We are going to take this learning further and write a story about our favourite animal and send them on an adventure!

Other learning.......

We are continuing to look at Easter in RE. We started PE this week and have been learning how to use a bat and ball. We are continuing to do phonics every day too.

In Jigsaw we thought about problem solving and making changes.

W/C 8th March 2021

In maths we have continued our work on length and height. We have introduced using a ruler and have practised measuring objects with a ruler and using and writing cm at the end eg. The pencil is 9cm long.

We have combined our topic and science lessons this week and we are thinking carefully about the 6 animal classification groups. We are looking at each one in detail so when we think of an animal we know if what group it is in. Eg. A bear is a mammal because it has fur and gives birth to live young.

Other learning.........

We are continuing with daily phonics, practising counting in lots of different ways as well as spending time thinking about our emotions and learning now we are back at school.

In RE we are continuing to think about Easter and Surprises too.
