This week has been assessment week so the beginning of the week focused mainly on assessments in Arithmetic, Problem Solving and Reasoning, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and Reading.
We then continued our work on decimals, learning how to represent hundredths as a fraction, decimal, on a number line, on a place value grid and using place value counters.
In English we have looked at how to build suspense and tension in writing and also studied the features of a diary entry.
The children have completed their termly baseline check in times tables - ask them about their score, they are very very proud of the progress they are making.
Year 4 have been really enjoying Forest School this half term - look at google classroom for lots of photos of their adventures.

In Maths this week we have continued learning about decimals. We have covered tenths on a place value grid as well as on a number line. Children have also started to divide one and two digit numbers by 10, for example: 3 ÷ 10 = 0.3
In English we have continued studying Arthur and the Golden Rope. Year 4 have reported their stories and have become editors. We have peer reviewed each other’s articles against our newspaper checklist to ensure we included all of the features. We have also focused on grammar and have looked at apostrophes for contraction and possession.
In Topic we have been learning about Viking Longships and Viking weaponry - the children have discovered how the Vikings fought battles and looked at the weapons they used in combat.
What a fabulous first week back it has been! It has been so wonderful seeing all of the children's smiling faces back at school again and hearing all about their lockdown learning.
In Maths this week we finished our fractions unit and have now started our new unit all about decimals. Decimals certainly have been mind-blowing to learn about! We have covered tenths and hundredths, and tenths as decimals. Why don't you ask your child what comes next: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9?

In English we have continued studying Arthur and the Golden Rope. A calamity has happened! A monstrous wolf has struck the village and knocked over the great fire. Year 4 reporters are on hand to give you the latest news with their very own newspaper articles. We even interviewed some eye-witnesses for extra information. We have learnt all about the structure of a newspaper article. Why don't you ask your child what 6 things we include in the lead (who, what, where, when why, how)?
In Topic we have learnt about King Arthur - the children decided whether they thought he was real or not from the evidence provided. We also learnt the story of Arthur and the Sword in the Stone.

Remember PE is on Mondays and Thursdays. This half term we are studying cricket!
Our new topic is Traders and Raiders!
Year 4 is an incredibly important year for timestables.
During Autumn 1 the children revisited their 2s, 5s and 10 timestables.
During Autumn 2 the children revisited their 3s, 4s and 8 timestables.
During Spring 1 the children continued to learn their 3s, 4s and 8 timestables.
This half term we are studying the 6s, 7s and 9 timestables.
The children have a timestable test 3 times a week where they are required to answer up to 60 questions in up to 4 minutes. They compete against themselves trying to beat their time, score, or both every time!
They are all making incredible progress and love to compare their scores to the previous week.
Please support your child by helping them revise 2s, 5s and 10s and learn 3s, 4s and 8s. This must include division facts eg 3x8= and 8= ÷3.
